    Understanding the NDIS

Everything you need to know about Australia's National Disability Insurance Scheme

    What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is Australia's transformative approach to supporting people with permanent and significant disabilities. Unlike traditional welfare systems, the NDIS provides individualized funding that puts choice and control in your hands. It's designed to help you pursue your goals, develop your skills, and participate fully in community life. The NDIS recognizes that every person's needs are unique and provides flexible support that adapts to your changing circumstances throughout your lifetime.

    Key Points:

    Person-centered approach
    Lifetime support
    Individual choice and control
    Community participation focus

    Who can access the NDIS?

NDIS eligibility is based on specific criteria designed to ensure support reaches those who need it most. You may be eligible if you're under 65 when you first apply, have a permanent and significant disability that substantially reduces your ability to participate effectively in activities, and require support throughout your lifetime. You must also be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa, and live in an NDIS service area.

    Key Points:

    Age under 65 at application
    Permanent disability
    Australian residency
    Significant functional impact

    How does the NDIS work?

The NDIS operates on a participant-centered model where you work collaboratively with NDIS planners to develop a personalized support plan. This plan outlines your goals, current supports, and the reasonable and necessary funded supports you'll receive. Your plan is reviewed regularly (typically every 12 months) to ensure it continues to meet your evolving needs. You can choose your service providers, change providers if needed, and have full transparency over how your funding is used.

    Key Points:

    Collaborative planning process
    Personalized support plans
    Regular plan reviews
    Provider choice and flexibility

    What supports are funded?

The NDIS funds a comprehensive range of supports across three main categories: Core Supports (daily living activities, transport, consumables), Capacity Building Supports (therapy services, life skills development, employment support), and Capital Supports (assistive technology, home modifications, vehicle modifications). All funded supports must be reasonable, necessary, related to your disability, represent value for money, and help you pursue your goals while building your independence.

    Key Points:

    Core daily supports
    Capacity building
    Capital investments
    Reasonable and necessary criteria
